In addition to working on a PhD in Organizational Leadership and Management, she was recently a 2021 Clubhouse Creator First Finalist | POETRY IN MOTION TV Show Producer.
And today she shares her 20 + years of entrepreneurship, leadership experience, publishing, and marketing with authors and brands that struggle with marketing.
I was a young single mother, who had been writing since I was 8 years old, and I was working on completing a degree in business. I really wanted to publish the stories I’d been writing for years so I could write full-time AND support my family doing something I love.
At the time, I was trying to get published traditionally and was working with a publisher-assigned editor. I felt I needed to do this so I wouldn’t have to keep working dead-end jobs that I hated and that barely paid the bills anyway.
I really wanted to be able to share the stories I dreamed up and take care of my family worry-free, but I was struggling with working long hours for a little money to make ends meet.
I felt terrible because I was perpetually struggling and knew there had to be more to life than working for someone else’s vision and goals. I felt even worse because I had children who were depending on me, and writing for a living wasn’t considered a stable, consistent option.
In fact, I felt selfish for even considering chasing my dreams when I had two little mouths to feed.
Then on top of all these feelings of uncertainty, the editor I was working with told me “I would never be published unless I learned to write to formula,” which at the time meant stories about Vampires and Werewolves.
I hit a wall.
Hitting the wall, in this case, meant that even though a publisher showed interest in my work, my vision and story would never be shared with the world, if I didn’t let them put me into a box.
And even worse, in this case hitting the wall actually killed my writing.
It left me afraid to write anything, feeling like my voice wasn’t good enough and would never be heard. This was just the start of the most excruciating battle with writer’s block I’ve ever faced.
It lasted for 2 years.
That was 2 years of second-guessing my words, feeling not good enough, feeling not smart enough to do what came naturally to me. I could barely write an email, much less work on my book.
Then luckily for me, one day a good friend of mine asked me what was going on with my book, and I was forced to relive the details of what had stopped me dead in my tracks 2 years earlier. But in that conversation, my friend helped me realize that I was allowing someone else to write my story and by their rules!
From that moment, I realized that there had to be more than one way to publish a book, so I started researching and learning about the different options.
And that’s when it became crystal clear to me that the secret was to self-publish.
It was clear that this was a way I could share my story, the way I envisioned it, and keep the rights and profits in the process.
Discovering this secret meant that I WOULD become a published author in spite of not adhering to the traditional publishing formula and trends. I also learned that successfully writing & publishing a book took more than just uploading a file and hitting submit on Amazon and that I should stop thinking that the only way to publish your book is the traditional route and create clear and concise plans for the writing, designing, publishing and promoting your book instead.
As a result of this epiphany, I wrote a few books (and a few more, and a few more) to learn every aspect of self-publishing. I learned how to write a book and make sure that it already has an engaged and excited audience when it’s published. After I did that, I started writing books faster and connecting with readers before my books were even released.
Suddenly, I was a published author, and I was hitting bestseller status.
My plan was to use all I’d learned to keep writing books and use my degrees in business to move up in corporate, then eventually move on to my own business helping others start their own businesses.
So, that’s what I did.
I had a growing business, a full client roster, and I was focused on helping start-ups do everything they needed to be successful and profitable.
But then several of my clients noted that they wanted to write books and didn’t know where to begin in the process, which led to me starting to help them write and publish their dream books.
After that, I got more requests to help more and more entrepreneurs, speakers, coaches, and consultants start their businesses and write excellent books.
And even though business was going well, things still weren’t perfect. I used my degree to support business coaching and consulting clients, but I was still only truly passionate about writing and publishing.
I ended up getting so frustrated and burned-out doing business coaching that I decided to use my business degrees (I was up to an MBA at this point) and my publishing experience to help people successfully publish books.
I simply call it the ™ Press Publish & Profit Method™.
I thought it would be amazing if I could create a system that took all of the guesswork AND struggle out of successfully writing and self-publishing.
So after working endlessly building a business, shifting my business, and taking experts through the process I created to profitably publish, though it sounds almost too good to be true, I can now write books in hours instead of months or years, without stress or struggling with what to write — and without bouts with writer’s block, and these books are powerful messages that help transform the readers, their mindsets, their businesses and so much more.
And I can write and publish without being subjected to traditional publishing cycles, royalty distribution or limited my rights to my own book, etc.
As a result of this, last year I was able to generate 6 figures in my business in just 8 months, Host a TV show with 4.9 million viewers plus it was picked up by Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire, supported almost 100 authors through this process to profitably write & publish books, my clients have secure 5 figure consulting contracts, had multiple TEDx talks, been featured Authors at the NAACP National Convention, have become regularly featured experts on major networks like NBC, have been featured in well-known magazines like Cosmo, appointed as board members for nonprofit organizations, and more.
And I was able to achieve my dream of being a published author.
No pulling double duty by working a job that kills my creativity during the day or working in a business that didn’t make me happy and staying up long nights to work on my books. I was able to stop that because I can write powerful and profitable books fast, but I help others do the same with their dream books.
And in the end, after writing 19 books in 6 years to learn what works in publishing and marketing, I’m now able to write, design, publish, and promote the books I dream up with no stress, without spending hours away from my family, without spending hours away from my business or even having to fit my vision into some traditional publishing box.
And I support Author brands, Entrepreneurs, and businesses with these same skills.
